Jaggers Pawtucket has put together a
"Furry Cons Reviewed" over on FA. I've been thinking about doing the same for a couple months now, but giving a general overview of what I like about each con and what I don't like. I hope I don't create too much controversy with this.. but here goes. I
Anthrocon 2009 - A-
The biggest furry con in the world and it keeps growing. AC's a one of a kind experience that no other con anywhere else has. But the schedule has become so jam-packed to the point that you're always going to miss something you wanted to see. And everything is spread out between the Westin Hotel and the Convention Center.
If you come here next year bring some conformable shoes because you're going to do a lot of walking through long halls, waiting on slow elevators, climbing stairs or broken escalators. Downtown Pittsburgh is awesome and the nearby restaurants and clubs love furries. Bring plenty of money for tips and the HUGE dealers room. I just wish most of Anthrocon (especially all the panels) could be moved into the convention center, just to save wear and tear on everyone's feet and also on the escalators and elevators.
Furry Fiesta 2009 - AA great first-time con that hit the bullseye and did almost everything right (dances were OK, but not my style), had great panels, fursuit games and threw some new ideas in. The hotel is super-conformable (Shiner Bock on tap!) and is in a great location. TFF has a lot of potential to grow into a big con quickly, but I hope not too fast!
Megaplex 2008 - A MP has been through many ups and downs over the years, but last year's con was a major improvement especially with the dealers den. And now that it's moved back to Orlando (nearby Kissimmee) and held during the summer I think this year's MP is gonna be a blast! If you don't like watching the Funday Pawpet Show don't go - the same (awesome) people run it. It's a very friendly fursuiters convention.
Furry Weekend Atlanta 2009 - B+
I love this con, but FWA is growing so fast that it really needs a larger staff, especially to take care of big events like the fursuit parade, which dissolved into chaos because there was no crowd control. I really liked the Hilton, though downtown Atlanta isn't the safest place (damn panhandlers) for walking around. And it still needs some more panels and events in the ballroom.
Mephit Fur Meet 2008 - C+Tyger Cowboy runs a very consistent and smooth convention to the point where if you've been to one MFM they start blurring together in your memories. I've gone here for 3 years and nothing at MFM really changes much. It's pretty much the same con schedule-wise year after year. The Holiday Inn Airport is large and I love the courtyard area for games, but it's sadly deteriorating and planned renovations have been slow because of the bad economy. And it's nearby a not-too-safe neighborhood. Don't leave anything of value in sight inside your vehicle overnight. If MFM was in a newer and safer hotel, I'd give it a B.
MFM's still a fun and highly recommended convention with well ran events, friendly attendees, relaxed atmosphere and a large dealers den. But I really think it's become kind of stagnant and needs a shake-up
somehow (especially with the Dances.. hardcore BOOMBOOMBOOM shouldn't be played on Sunday night) and if they don't improve the Holiday Inn soon, a move to somewhere else in the future.
Rocket City Fur Meet 2009 - C+
There were times that this year's RCFM was a ton of fun, other times I was really bored sitting in my room watching TV with nothing to do outside. Except for a few, most of the panels didn't appeal to me (a lot of Second Life stuff). The DJ's and dances were hit and miss again. I loved the rooms in the Estate Suites and its situated in a nice part of Huntsville, but there isn't much in the way of food in short walking distance. If RCFM wants to get rid of its "Relax-A-Con" rep there's gotta be more to do.
